Arnaud de Villeneuve Ambré Collection Rivesaltes 1993 75 cl. 16%
Vintage Rivesaltes – France
Arnaud de Villeneuve is one of the finest producers when it comes to Rivesaltes. And that’s a conversation we don’t have often enough, because this is a phenomenal fortified wine that truly deserves some of the spotlight often reserved for Port and Madeira.
Rivesaltes is a sweet fortified wine from Roussillon, located between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean coast. At Villeneuve, they primarily use Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, and Macabeu, which are vinified like a traditional white wine until fermentation is stopped by the addition of neutral grape spirit. What follows is a long ageing process, taking place in concrete vats, small barrels, and large casks. The 1933 vintage contains 116 grams of sugar per liter – about the same as Port.
Color: Deep amber with orange hues.
Aroma: A cornucopia of candied orange, roasted nuts, caramel, and dates.
Taste notes: Sweet, yet with a fine freshness. Rich notes of vanilla, dried fruit, old Cognac, and oak.
Serving suggestion: Enjoy it chilled, for example with cheese.
Roussillon is the world’s leading producer of naturally sweet wines. Here we find Muscats de Rivesaltes, Rivesaltes, Maury, Banyuls, and Banyuls Grands Crus. These different appellations refer not only to geographical areas but also to different terroirs and grape varieties: Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Grenache Noir, Malvoisie du Roussillon, Maccabeu, and Muscats (Petits Grains or Alexandria).
Arnaud de Villeneuve is a cooperative located in the town of Rivesaltes in Roussillon. It was established in 2007 when two historic and well-regarded firms – Cave de Salses (founded in 1909) and Cellars de Rivesaltes (founded in 1932) – merged. Today, the cooperative includes more than 220 members who supply grapes from a wide range of terroirs and work together to produce a diverse portfolio of wines. The most renowned are the sweet vin doux naturel and the oxidative rancio. The winery’s impressive and well-guarded cellar still holds wines dating back to the 1930s – and prices remain surprisingly affordable considering the quality and provenance.
