Mas de Boislauzon – Chateauneuf-du-Pape (ECO) 75 CL

Vin de Tradition – Rhône – France

Mas de Boislauzon is located in the northernmost part of the châteauneuf zone, very close to Beaucastel. Siblings Daniel and Christine Chaussy control plots in Pignan (sand), Bois Lauzon (large pebbles/galets roulés) as well as la Gardiole, les Brusquieres and Palestor (clay soil). Since the 2016 vintage, the siblings’ respective children have also been part of the team.
The Chaussy family has grown organically for a long time, and since the 2012 vintage is fully certified.

The wine is made with a base in approx. 70-year-old, low-yielding vine.
The de-stemmed grapes become wine without the use of cultured yeast: they are given the starting aid of a ‘pied de cuvée’ of natural yeast.
After a month’s maceration, it is stored for 16 months, mostly in concrete tanks but also in old oak barrels before bottling, which takes place without filtration.

Grenache dominates the blend as a percentage, but the style is masculine and powerful via 40% mourvèdre; a wine with bushy eyebrows but at the same time also an elegance with floral fruitiness, à la grecque olives, raw licorice, bakelite, bay leaves, lavender and a touch of raspberry. The taste is intense and full with youthful, gloomy fruit.

Over time, both wildness and dark berry fruit diminish, which are instead replaced by mature nuances of leather and tobacco as the tannins release their grip – a process that takes place over approx. 10-30 years.

“This powerful, ripe, incredibly sexy beauty should be snatched up by readers. Blackcurrants, black cherries, ground herbs, graphite, and licorice notes all flow to a deep, full-bodied, rockingly textured base cuvée that more than delivers the goods. Expansive, layered, and concentrated, it competes with most special cuvées out there. It’s not for wimps. Drink this terrific wine over the coming decade.”
