Midtfyns Bryghus was founded in 2004, and is housed in a closed butcher’s shop in Brobyværk, from where in 2005 the first beer is sent to the market. At the start, the brewery focuses on brewing beer of Scottish origin under license, and produces the two beers Moulin Ale and Braveheart, which are the only beers the brewery offers in its first year of existence. In 2006, the brewery is taken over by Eddie Szweda, who still owns the brewery today. In the same year, Midtfyn’s Bryghus launches their Stout, Ale and Wheat. The following year, the range is further expanded, when Midtfyns Bryghus launches a whole six new beers on the market; Imperial Stout, IPA, Double IPA, Easter Brew, Christmas Ale and Christmas Stout. Imperial Stout is subsequently named beer novelty of the year 2007.
2007 will also be the year Midtfyn’s Brewery gets Hollywood on its back. The Filmselskabet behind the Mel Gibson film “Braveheart” will not accept that Midtfyns Bryghus produces a beer that shares its name with the film, even though the same beer has been produced without problems in Scotland for 10 years. The decision to take Moulin Ale and Braveheart out of production had already been made, but Midtfyns Bryghus chooses to take the matter to the press, and gets an impressive amount of column space and publicity for the SEK 10,000 that Midtfyns Bryghus ultimately has pay in compensation.
A collaboration with the Danish Arsenal fan club sees the light of day in 2008. Midtfyn’s Bryghus launches Gunners Ale, a red ale, where the white color of the foam and the red color of the beer are matched to the colors of Arsenal’s club heritage. In the same year Wit becomes the lancer. Chili Tripel and Barley Wine will be launched in 2009, Chili Tripel will be named beer novelty of the year 2009 at the Danish Ølentusiaters general assembly at the beginning of 2010.
At the Danish Ølentusiaters Ølfestival in 2010, Midtfyns Bryghus shared a stand with the Dutch brewery Brouwerrij De Molen. The match was so successful that the brewers from the two breweries agreed to brew a beer together. The result, X-Porter, was first brewed the weekend after the Ølfestivalen, and is a combination of the two brewers Menno and Jan’s creativity and many years of experience put together and bottled.
In 2010, Rough Snuff will hit the streets, a collaboration with hand brewer Erik Nielsen, who today runs Ø-Bryg. Rough Snuff is a Belgian Ale brewed with, among other things, bladderwort and snuff. The latter ingredient had serious consequences, as tobacco is not allowed to be added to food in the EU. Therefore, the version of Rough Snuff that can be bought today is called Rough Snuff II and is a censored version without tobacco. Rough Snuff has since been named beer novelty of the year 2010. In the summer of 2013, Midtfyns Bryghus will move from the butcher’s shop in Brobyværk to modern and more up-to-date facilities in Årslev, where a new and modern brewing facility will also be installed. The first brewery at the new facility will be named Midtfyns Bryghus Nr. 1, and a single hop Pale Ale brewed at Simcoe.
