Gracefully matured tawny port wine that after a long storage with the producer now appears perfectly rounded and ready to drink.
Quinta da Valeira is a small, family-owned house, which on the quinta of the same name has almost 10 hectares of vineyards in the butter hole between Cima Corgo and Douro Superior, a few km from São João de Pesqueira. I 430-500 m.o.h. grown a variety of the classic port wine grapes on impassable, slate-clad mountain sides.
Tawny is characterized as a type of wine in that the port wine is stored in smaller barrels under the addition of air, so that the wine slowly oxidizes and transforms from a dark, fruity and angular port wine to a finely polished, silky wine with a peacock tail of storage aromas rather than retaining the original fruit aromas. ‘Liquid brunsviger’ is an often used and particularly nice metaphor that is astonishingly apt for the wine’s expression.
The cellar master has mixed this 10 year tawny of selected vintages with an age profile in the mixture corresponding to this and approved as such by the Port Wine Institute by tasting.
Irresistible, sweet aromas of powdered sugar, walnuts, cinnamon, orange peel, candy and raisins provide an intense port wine experience. The acid and the alcohol balance the whole, so that despite the sweetness it appears elegant.
Enjoy this intense port wine as the glass in time, as the end of a meal, for nuts, nut or caramel desserts, and when the season is for it: for Christmas cookies.
And remember this now: good port wine is poured into spacious glasses, preferably white wine glasses, in which you get the optimal aroma experience rather than the ‘grandmother glass’ that is only used for wines that smell bad. We recommend a serving temperature of 12-18 °, coolest if served as an aperitif.
