Girlan – Pinot Grigio 75 CL

Cantina Girlan

Alto Adige-Südtirol is famous for Italy’s best white wines with a ‘cool’ profile and acidity freshness. The spectacular backdrop of the Dolomites gives the grapes excellent sun exposure, plenty of minerals that the grapes absorb and, not least, cool nights that keep the acidity in the grapes. The cooperatives are a dominant factor in Alto Adige; not just in terms of volume, but certainly also when the yardstick is called quality. Kellerei Girlan is one of the region’s model co-operatives with the celebrated winemaker Gerhard Kofler as a very active wreath cake figure.

For more than 100 years, pinot grigio has been one of Alto Adige’s leading white wine grapes, which, unlike its French version, is not characterized by bold, full-bodied wines, but rather by the wines’ fresh, crisp and slender profile with aromatic clarity, which gives plenty of room for mineral nerve. The fields are located at an altitude of 400-500 metres, where there is a favorable interaction between warm days and cool nights.

After a very short maceration, the wine is fermented at 18° and rests on stainless steel until bottling. This gives a very ‘naked’ interpretation of the grape, where terroir features come to the fore.

Nose and taste show ‘cool’ elements of light-ripe pear, honeydew melon, almond, hay, white flowers and a hint of green. Light fullness is kept in check by a straight acidity and a round minerality that makes this dry wine everything else flimsy and shrill.

Enjoy the wine in its youth with simple dishes with fish, shellfish or not too brackish poultry. Try it also with a rustic salad or as a delicious aperitif wine.
