Fairview Primo Pinotage is an exclusive and highly acclaimed red wine from Fairview Estate in Paarl, South Africa. Made from 100% Pinotage grapes, South Africa’s signature varietal, this wine represents the pinnacle of the country’s winemaking, combining concentration, finesse, and complexity.
Origin and Vinification
The grapes come from a single vineyard where the bush vines grow in Glenrosa soils, known for excellent water retention and good drainage. The vines were planted in 1998, and to ensure maximum concentration, only a few clusters per shoot are harvested by hand.
After manual harvesting, the grapes are carefully sorted to remove unhealthy berries and green stems. Fermentation takes place in open French oak fermenters (foudres), where the grape skins are gently punched down several times a day. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine matures for 18 months in French oak barrels, about 40% new, undergoing malolactic fermentation to soften the wine and add complexity.
Tasting Profile
In the glass, Fairview Primo Pinotage shows a deep, dark red color. The nose is complex with aromas of dark berries like blackberry and black cherry, ripe plums, spices such as cinnamon, and subtle hints of licorice. The palate is intense and well-structured, layered with dark fruit, spice, and a slight saline note. The tannins are firm yet silky, leading to a long, elegant finish.
Aging Potential and Food Pairing
This wine has excellent aging potential and can be cellared for up to eight years, developing even more complexity and depth over time.
