GlenAllachie 12-Year-Old Single Malt is the distillery’s flagship expression, showcasing its fantastic DNA. This is a deliciously sweet dram, primarily matured in sherry casks.
The first notes that come to mind when nosing the glass are creamy toffee and honey, combined with raisins and a hint of roasted coffee in the background. On the palate, you’ll find flavors of honey, marzipan, and bananas, while the finish offers aromas of creamy toffee, raisins, and coffee.
This whisky is the result of Billy Walker’s months-long exploration in GlenAllachie’s warehouses, where he tasted thousands of casks to determine which types should be combined to define the distillery’s flagship expression.
GlenAllachie Distillery
Established in 1967, the first “new make” spirit ran from the stills in February 1968. GlenAllachie, meaning “The Valley of the Rocks,” was built during the whisky boom of the 1960s when Scotland’s total production increased significantly, primarily driven by demand from the American market. The first owners, who constructed the distillery, were Mackinlays, a subsidiary of Scottish & Newcastle Breweries. The architect behind the project was William Delmé-Evans, who also designed several other Scottish distilleries.
In 1985, Scottish & Newcastle Breweries sold Mackinlays to Invergordon Distillers, and in 1989, GlenAllachie became part of Campbell Distillers (now Pernod Ricard). In October 2017, the legendary Billy Walker and two business partners acquired the distillery.
Distillery Equipment
The distillery is equipped with a 9.4-ton mash tun and eight washbacks. Distillation takes place in two sets of stills, which are unusual due to their very broad bases. Another distinctive feature of GlenAllachie’s still house is that all “shell and tube” condensers are positioned horizontally above the stills. GlenAllachie’s water supply comes from the impressive Benrinnes, located just behind the distillery.
GlenAllachie Distillers Company
Founded in October 2017, GlenAllachie Distillers Company was established to acquire the distillery from Pernod Ricard. The company is led by Master Distiller Billy Walker, who has over 50 years of experience in the whisky industry. He is joined by his partners Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson. Thanks to the financial stability following Billy’s sale of The Benriach Distillery Company, the team is free from short-term constraints. Things will be done properly, and Billy Walker is inviting us all on an exciting journey.
