After making a fortune in the wool business, Mr. Pommery planned to retire. While planning to sit back and enjoy life, Madame Pommery became pregnant 17 years after her first born child. To secure his children’s future financially, Mr. Pommery decided to resume his professional role, but when the wool industry was in deep crisis, he found an opening in the growing champagne world. As early as 31 December 1856, all Pommery’s wines were so-called Grand Crus and when Mr. Pommery passed away in 1858, the operation was taken over by Madame Pommery. Almost immediately, she invested heavily in launching her wines internationally and was one of the first to market luxury products and create a recognized and lucrative brand, weaving the already rich history into the creation of a world-class champagne house . As well as being a renowned and successful businesswoman, Madame Pommery also cared about her employees and spearheaded the introduction of a pension system and the construction of an orphanage in Reims.

Pommery is located in the heart of Reims and is the only champagne house with vineyards in the middle of the city. Reims with Épernay and Ay is the center of champagne production. Some of the biggest champagne houses are based in Reims, under the city there are kilometer-long tunnels excavated from the huge limestone remains, some parts of which date back to Roman times.
