St. Antony Rothe Bach Blaufränkisch (ECO) 2016 75 cl.
German Quality Red
Falstaff 95 points
St. Antony takes blaufränkisch seriously. And when you do that, you get a wine that can charm most people with its mix of fruit, minerality and complexity.
The grapes come from vines on the field Ölberg, a Grosse Lage field located on Der Roter Hang, above Nierstein. About 10% of St. Antony’s total area is blaufränkisch – it is primarily here on Ölberg and on Pettenthal. The latter was previously bottled under the name Rothe Bach, but from 2021 the wine is called Pettenthal.
Lange Berg has scored 95 points at Falstaff.
Colour: Deep brown.
Aroma: Intense cherry fruit, blackcurrant, violet, currant and blueberry.
Tasting notes: Floral notes mingle with dark berries and a mineral sensation (iron, slate). Rose, violet, wild berries. The tannins are soft and incipient ripeness provides a layer of complexity beneath the still fresh fruit.
St. Antony has been producing wine since the end of World War I, and was officially founded in 1920 by the “Guten Hoffnungshütte” in Rheinhessen. The first vintage was 1918. A year when Europe was in ruins. Since 1990, the small craft winery has been a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter, and has been working with certified organic standards since 2006.
St. Antony owns a beautiful wine landscape near the Rhine, and has 60 hectares of vineyards – primarily in Rote Hang in Nierstein. In addition to Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc, they also grow Pinot Noir and Blaufränkisch.
