This version of Peat’s Beast is a fiercely peat-smoked and full-bodied whiskey, which is composed by the renowned Master Blender, Richard Paterson. He is best known for his exceptional work with Dalmore, but this edition of Peat’s Beast proves that he can also handle smoke. The taste is filled with intense notes of, among other things, creamy licorice, tar and peat smoke
Truly a beast of a whisky, though not without its beauty. Un-chill filtered and bottled at 46% abv, this is very peaty as you’d expect, though not in the really big hitters like Ardbeg’s Supernova. But if you like bonfires on beaches and asphalt on kittens, this is a good one to try.
Nose: Waves, wood smoke, ash and tar. A touch of apple and citrus, but the peat unsurprisingly dominates.
Palate: A beach barbeque… salt and kippers, a bit of butter and pepper seasoning. Water brings out some of the lighter apple and banana notes, but again the phenolics are the main event here.
Finish: This ages with ash, dark chocolate and pepper flowing over an oily base.
Overall: A dram that lives up to its name; the beast must be tamed with a drop of water, but it will never be too docile.
