Les Allées de Cantemerle is the 2nd wine for Château Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc 5th Cru Classé. The château is located at Macau, just south of Margaux on alluvial gravel deposits from the Garonne River.
Over the past 25 years, the castle’s land holdings have, via huge investments, grown to its original size from the 1855 classification, namely 90 hectares. The winery and storage facilities are now also up to date, and as a result, the quality has greatly improved over the past 15 years.
The wine consists almost exclusively of cabernet sauvignon with a little merlot added.
Fermentation takes place in large wooden barrels with a total maceration of just under a month. The wine is then aged for 12 months in 20% new barriques.
After assemblage, the wine rests in large wooden barrels before bottling, which takes place without filtration, but only with a gentle clarification.
The aroma and taste offer classic virtues such as blackcurrant, forest berries and slightly cask-derived aromas of coffee and vanilla.
The gravelly, siliceous soil gives the wine an excellent elegance; it is not without reason that the Médoc peninsula is still the benchmark for cabernet sauvignon-dominated wines.
Les Allés de Cantemerle can be enjoyed now and 5-10 years from now.
Over time, cigar box aromas will take the place of luscious blackcurrant fruit.
We recommend a spacious ‘Bordeaux glass’ and a serving temperature of 16-18°, preferably for a dish with lamb or beef and a cloud sauce with a splash of mulled wine in it.
