Douro Valley Port
Kopke’s legendary tawnies with an indication of age are, together with the house’s Colheitas, cask-aged port wines made from selected grapes from the Douro Superior and partly from the house’s own Quinta São Luíz, which belongs to the Douro’s most modern production quintas. It is located in Tabuaҫo near Pinhão and, in addition to production facilities, contains a guest building, its own church (!) And its own vineyards.
In a 30 year old tawny gate, it is the task of the experienced basement master to maintain the same expression and style year after year. Each house has its own style, and Kopke is famous for elegant, complex and ethereal Tawnies with an age indication showing a very high average age. This excellent (and expensive) port wine is made from tawnies from a number of different vintages, some of which are younger and some are significantly older than 30 years, but with an age profile in the blend that the port wine institute has tasted approved as typical of the type.
The color is light mahogany green reflections and an almost transparent edge with a clear age mark and an aroma, where the rancio aromas balance Christmas spices, raisins, pickled figs and lemon peel. The volatile acid and medicinal attributes contribute with focus and an incredible complexity. Tawny with so much age requires a little more of the taster, but conversely also gives a lot back if you give the wine the attention it deserves.
Enjoy Kopke 30 Years Old Tawny Port of a good white wine glass at a serving temperature of 18-19 °.
We recommend that you do not serve food for the wine. It’s hard to spot the dish or hapser that should enhance the experience of this port wine.
