El Dorado Diamond Port Mourant 2010 Vert is a blended-in-the-barrel blend from the famous Demerara distillery. This region of Guyana was once home to dozens of distilleries, each producing a different style of rum. These distilleries have all closed today, but some of their stills and recipes have been preserved.
The Diamond distillery has blended rums from Coffey stills and the legendary Port Mourant pot-still before aging.
These rums were distilled in 2010, aged in old bourbon barrels and then bottled brut de fût in 2019.
The nose is initially characterized by roasted aromas. First a little sweet coffee, then a rather strong burnt wood. Notes of roasted nuts emerge reminiscent of fresher wood as they shed their charred envelope.
On aeration, the intensely caramelized nutty notes that give Demerara rums their charm come through. Here they are delicately coated and carefully seasoned.
The palate is gripped by a heavily toasted oak barrel, whose burnt surface gives an almost mineral sensation of charcoal. From this darkness emerge notes of licorice with a juicy bar of concentrated juice. Nuts with intense kernels are present on the mid-palate, richly caramelized and coated.
The finish offers a touch of smoke and roast, but above all plenty of roundness.
“A simple, effective Demerara, with the usual roundness of the range’s rums…”
