Limited Scotch Single Malt Whisky
Ledaig 1993 Gordon and Macphail 28 Year Old Batch #21/133
When the Isle of Mull’s Tobermory distillery opened way back in 1798, it was originally known as Ledaig. It was dormant for most of the 20th century, closed down by DCL in 1930 and when it reopened in 1972 it did so again as the Ledaig Distillery. However, its revival was short-lived and it closed in 1975. When the distillery reopened again in 1979, it was now known as Tobermory. Its production in previous years had generally been peated whiskey like this, and the single malt was still bottled under the Ledaig brand name. The newly revived company also began producing non-peat to supply a blended malt which they marketed under the Tobermory name. Burn Stewart stopped blending when they took over in 1993, choosing to continue production of both styles as two different single malt brands. The unpeated single malt took on the Tobermory name, while the traditional peated style fittingly retained the historic Ledaig name.
This whiskey was distilled in 1993 and aged in single refill sherry butt #703 for 28 years.
Gordon & MacPhail is one of the largest and most recognizable whiskey companies in the world. Although they began distilling at the newly renovated Benromach Distillery in 1998, for most of their history they were an independent bottler. Their labels are recognized by whiskey lovers worldwide, and their licensed bottlings from distilleries such as Macallan and Talisker in the 1970s and 1980s, when the companies did not bottle themselves, are a large part of the success of these distilleries today.
The Connoisseurs Choice brand is one of the most recognizable independent bottlings on the market and this release follows the 2018 rejuvenation of the brand which saw it rebranded as a premium range of single casks.
