Frappin is one of the oldest producers of Cognac in France. In fact, not only the history of the family is closely interlaid with the history of cognac, it goes before it for centuries.

The Frappin family first appeared in what was to become the Cognac region in 1270. In those days, the region was part of the Duchy of Aquitaine, which again was a result of Eleanor of Aquitaine’s marriage with Henrik II, part of the English French “Angevin empire” of the British plantation. The region would not be recovered by France before 1416.

The family has been wine growers, and later distilleries, in 21 generations. Their 750 hectares of great property, Château de Fontpinot in Segonzac, located in the heart of the Cognac’s Grand Champagne district, has 600 hectares of Ugni Blanc Vinches. It is the only cognac manufacturer that is classified as a château.

In addition to being a recognized Cognac manufacturer, FraPin is also an award-winning manufacturer of perfumes and cologne.

Front 1270 Premier Cru Grande Champagne Cognac does not bear the VSOP designation (VERY SPECIAL OLD PALE), even though it has been stored in the required minimum four years. Instead, FraPin 1270 carries no designation for minimum aging.

All the grapes used in FraPin 1270 come from the goods in the Grand Champagne appellation. This district is considered the heart of Cognac, and is the source of its largest cognac. As many cognachuse, FraPin distills its base wine on the berry, giving the resulting spirits a more creamy, more substantial flavoring weight.

This FraPin 1270 is designed to be an entry level cognac. It can be served as mixer in cocktails or on the rocks. You can even store a bottle in the freezer and serve the ice cold. In France, VS cognac often served over ice. This cognac would work as well as an aperitif, as it would act as a digestion.

Front 1270 Premier Cru Grande Champagne Cognac, 40% ABV, 750 ml.

The color is a rich amber. On the nose, the cognac is very flourished, with notes of dried flowerpotpourri, along with hints of violet and dried rose leaf and slightly dried fruit. There are notes of Toasty oak and, remarkably for a relatively young cognac, hints of leather.

On the palate, the cognac is smooth, with notes of caramel and dried fruit, along with a little vanilla and a bit of cinnamon and tropical spices. As the cognac opens, notes of apple and bulb appear, along with some milk choladenotes.

The end is long and smooth, with a lingering sweetness of dried fruit accompanied by a caramel note.
