Borgo Scopeto Borgonero 2020 75 cl.

Toscana Rosso – Italy

Borgonero was first produced in 1998 and compared to the “softer” Chianti Classicos from Borgo Scopeto, it is the strongest and most tannic wine from the castle. This is primarily because, unlike the other wines at the castle, the wine is not made from almost 100% Sangiovese, but also contains Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. All grapes come from the castle’s own vineyards in Cagliano and Vittoria, which lie at an altitude of 400-450 m.a.s.l. After a separate alcoholic fermentation, followed by a classic malolactic fermentation, the wines from the different grape varieties are blended together, and the finished mixture matured for 14-16 months exclusively in 500 l French oak barrels (Durmast). After bottling, the wine is matured for a further min. 4 months in bottle.

Borgonero is extremely concentrated and intense in its dark red color. On the nose, the wine is incredibly complex and charming, with almost ethereal scents of leather and tobacco. In the taste, you are overwhelmed by a very structured and fierce dark character at first, but quite quickly the wine turns into something more velvety or almost silky – something that surprises in such a strong wine.

You shouldn’t offer lighter dishes with the wine, because then it takes up all the space! Serve it with e.g. strong soups (beef hall

The Borgo Scopeto property near Castelnuovo Berardenga a few km. from Siena was founded in the year 1000 and was then part of the agricultural holdings of the bishop of Siena. The beautiful tower on the property was built in the 13th century and was part of a larger defensive structure. At the beginning of the 14th century, the church gifted the property to one of the most important families of Siena, the Sozzini, who kept it for more than 5 centuries.

Under the new owners, Borgo Scopeto quickly became a meeting place for humanists, artists and poets – often accused of heresy and on the run from the church. All this can be read about when you make use of the excellent hotel facilities the building offers today.

Borgo Scopeto has been owned and operated since 1998 by one of the most renowned Brunello producers – Caparzo. The property consists of 493 ha. situated at an altitude of 350-400 m.a.s.l., but only 37 ha. is planted with vines – of course on the most suitable plots with a soil of lime, sandstone and marl. 30 ha. is planted with Sangiovese, 3 ha. with Cabernet and Syrah and 4 ha. with Chardonnay.

e), fried red meat, dishes with truffles, mushrooms and mature cheeses. Also try it with fish dishes served with a strong sauce or stock.
