Hoher Rain is a single-field wine from the field of the same name near the winery, located on south-east exposed field with sandy clay soil in the top layer. Grüner veltliner thrives in a more nutrient-rich soil than Riesling and acknowledges the good conditions with a well-seasoned, complex wine with high drinkability.
Although Bio-Weingut Geyerhof are as organic as they sound, there are no ‘mysterious’ aromas in the wine, but rather beer-pure, sharply focused and terroir-true soda with excellent transparency. Ilse Maier and her son Josef would rather add a little sulfur to the wines, whereby the characteristics of the fields are preserved in the wines rather than 100% sulphur-free wines, where differences in terroirs are blurred and the taste of fallen apples from any apple orchard becomes dominant over time. The Maier family cares incredibly about nature conservation, but they also care about terroir and the transmission of that in the finished wine.
Hoher Rain is at the not-so-broad-shouldered end of the genre, with disciplined fullness held in check by prominent, ripe acidity. Here, classic veltliner elements of herbs and freshly ground white pepper are wrapped in a juicy fruit with apple, melon and white peach. The aftertaste is stringy with airy clarity and showing perfect phenolic ripeness from grapes picked in October.
This is a superb and extremely supple food wine, but there is also enough charm here for the glass in the early hours. Try it, among other things, with light roasts, with a flavorful fish soup, with the new wave of futuristic Spanish cooking or with a smoked salmon dish.
For this grüner veltlliner, we recommend spacious white wine glasses and a serving temperature of around 8-10°.
