Stallman-Hiestand Spätburgunder Kreuz is a German red wine made from 100% Spätburgunder. The grapes come from the field Kreuz in the Dienheim area. The wine is a fine example of the freshness and elegance that characterizes Stallman-Hiestand’s wines, and which could make many Burgundians envious. Before bottling, the wine rests in French barriques, where the delicate fruit gains depth and complexity.
The Rheinhessen wine region is the largest of Germany’s 13 wine-producing regions. With protection from the surrounding hills, the tempering influence of the Rhine, long summers and mild winters, the conditions for growing wine grapes in Rheinhessen are extremely favorable. Here you will find the Stallmann-Hiestand winery, which produces its wines in the old-fashioned way with long fermentation on the grape skins and aging in oak barrels.
Winemaker Christoph Hiestand’s signature can be read in every drop. His philosophy is based on a small handful of core principles to ensure quality: strict yield regulation, selective harvesting of grapes, gentle treatment in the cellar and long fermentation. Next, he gives the wines as much space as possible to develop freely, so that each variety is allowed to express its individuality.
No documents testify exactly when the manor house was built, but it must have been in the middle of the 19th century. The wine cellar built into the mountain is 250 years old and with its almost constant temperature throughout the year and an ideal ripening climate, it is a valuable asset. A new building on the lush grounds has therefore never come into question. Instead, an investment was made in expanding the wine press room above the vault and thereby making room for the modern and, above all, gentle grape press. The special two-story construction makes it possible to avoid traditional pumping processes and thus helps to preserve valuable aromas in the wine.
Stallmann-Hiestand has put a lot of thought into its wines, and it can be tasted, and the team is excited and proud to show off their latest vintage – 2019 was a particularly good year for the winery!
