Quinta do Portal is a family-owned port winery that benefited from the changes in the law when Portugal joined the EC in 1986 and it became legal to store and ship port from the Douro Valley itself, breaking up the oligopoly of the big port wineries in Vila Nova de Gaia and for always changed the market structure in favor of the smaller producers in the valley.
2000 is an excellent vintage, which naturally produced low yields due to rain during flowering. A hot summer and well-timed rains in August produced excellent grape material at Quinta do Portal, which was harvested between 19 and 23 September.
This vintage port is a blend of touriga nacional, touriga franca and tinta roríz from old vines on Quinta dos Muros’ steep slate patamares in the eastern part of the Pinhão valley. The vinification proceeded completely undramatically with fermentation in granite warehouse and steel tank and ended up with a residual sugar content of just over 90 grams/litre and a total production of around 25,000 bottles.
After 20 years of storage, this vintage port now appears rounded without being mature.
You thus get a harmonious and concentrated wine that, at an extremely reasonable price, offers a wonderful drinking experience and an insight into the life course of a good vintage port wine.
Aroma and taste have full, dark berries in a robust style with sweetness and gentle tannins and elegant length in the aftertaste.
Enjoy Quinta do Portal VIntage 2000 with chocolate desserts, with tangy blue cheese or on its own, with the port wine disciples.
Remember to enjoy the wine in spacious glasses, so that you also get the scent experience.
We recommend a serving temperature of 17-18°.
Like all vintage port wines, it is bottled without filtration, and decanting is therefore mandatory if you want to have a good experience with the wine. This is done in good time before it is served, so as not to lose face in front of the guests…
