Quinta do Portal – 30 Year Old Aged Tawny Port 70 CL 20%

Douro Valley Port – Portugal

Quinta do Portal is synonymous with the Mansilha family, whose history in the Douro dates back to the 15th century. In the Pinhão valley, dug deep into the slate rocks, are Quinta do Portal’s naturally temperate cellars, where long rows of e.g. tawnyfade develops at will.

In a 30-year tawny, the evaporation of port during storage begins to play a significant role in terms of both concentration and price. So while an old tawny like this will never be a cheap pleasure, you still get solid bang for your buck in this intense and complex port.
Annually, around 3-5% of a tawny evaporates during the oxidative aging in oak, which in itself gives a more concentrated wine. A 30 year tawny has a high proportion of these old wines and therefore shows great concentration: providing depth and complexity in the finished wine is another matter and the task of the local cellar master and chief blender.

Quinta do Portal 30 Year Old Tawny is an old tawny where winemaker and chief blender Paulo Coutinho has blended a large number of casks from different vintages into a wine with a profile similar to a 30-year-old tawny and approved as such by the Port Wine Institute’s tasting panel. Through many years of storage, this port has long since thrown away the fruit of its youth, but in return it has acquired a peacock tail of aging aromas but a complexity that far exceeds the starting point.

Aroma and taste have deep, intense notes of walnut, dried fig, pickled orange peel, a little Christmas spice and apothecary counter. The sweetness is balanced by a fine acidity and wrapped in great intensity and a finish that can be tasted minutes after.

This wine is enjoyed either (with respect to the wine) without anything else or as a dessert wine together with dishes with nuts/and or caramel.

Remember to enjoy the wine in spacious wine glasses, so that you get the scent experience with you.

We recommend a serving temperature of 14-17°.

After opening, the wine stays fresh for up to a few months – the longest if stored in the fridge.
