This Madeira comes from the wine company Ferraz, which produces some of the best Madeira wines. Today the company is under The Madeira Wine Company, which counts 9 of the best wine companies on the island.
Ferraz Medium Rich Madeira has a pleasant and typical character for a young Madeira. It has a scent of dried fruits and a hint of oak. It is semi-sweet and tastes of dried fruit, spices and a bit of oak.
The Madeira can be enjoyed now.
Serve the Madeira at 18-20ºC with desserts, cakes or cheese.
Wine has been made on Madeira since the 17th century – and always according to the very special production method “Estufagem”. In earlier times, when the grapes came from small villages far away from the main and commercial city of Funchal, it was dangerous to transport the wine across the volcanic island after the autumn harvest, so you had to wait until spring.
In the intervening period, the wine was stored in dense sacks under the roofs, where it was exposed to extreme heat in autumn and cold in winter. This gave the Madeira its unique charred character and at the same time was “tempered”, so that it is the most durable type of wine in the world. The best madeiras can be aged for over 100 years, – yes, you have even tasted more than 200-year-old madeira, which was only now at its peak. A few manufacturers still use the old method today, but most use a mechanized form, where this temperature change is provoked in temperature-controlled rooms.
