Kopke Port – 40 Years Old White 37,5 cl. 20%

Douro Valley Port

40 year old white port wine is an extremely rare size. Although the demand for white, aged quality port has exploded in recent years, this demand was many decades away when the base wines for this port were created. Often the green grapes were included together with the blue ones for the production of ruby or tawny types.

The average age of this wine can only be guessed at. Kopke have used the oldest available casks in their warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia to create this unique port, which fortunately is not only unique; it tastes and, not least, smells unearthly good.

A sensory inferno of sugar-vanilla pickled apricots, light moscovado, toasted wood, currants, lemon and orange peel and a little star anise are part elements of a sublime unity. Sweetness and concentration are offset by acidity, so it is still a pleasure to enjoy the wine. The aftertaste is almost endless.

The fact that such dense and concentrated wine can have such good balance and freshness is not only to do with good grape material; the cellar master and oenologist/blender have performed at the highest level to hit the right storage conditions and blends.

Ideally enjoyed without food, but if you insist, try with a well-made apple strudel, crème caramel or foie gras terrine.

Try with a serving temperature of approx. 11-14°.

After opening, the wine will keep for a few months, preferably refrigerated.
