Islay Mist was created on Islay in the 1920s to celebrate the 21st birthday of the son and heir of the then Lord Sargadale. It was considered a very important celebration with guests from near and far.
It was judged that the famous Laphroaig Single Malt, with its heaviness, would not be to all guests’ tastes, so the Laphroaig Single Malt was blended with a range of Highland malt whiskies, including Glenlivet, and balanced with Lowland grain whiskies. The result proved so popular that it was decided to market a similar blend under the name Islay Mist, a luxurious Scotch whisky. The gold-winning whiskey still wears the “Lord of the Isle” seal with pride.
True to the original recipe, Islay Mist remains the peaty blend it always has been, with distinctive, balanced smoky and peaty notes between layers of mild oak and malt.
The scent is a subtle and seductive blend of smoked peat and seaweed. On the palate, the peat is dominant, but softened by a complex fusion of sweet malt, salt and oak. The soft peat clings to the palate, while toffee and coffee ensure a bittersweet finish.
The sublime whiskey has many gold medals in its portfolio and has received many words of praise along the way, e.g. from whiskey writer Dave Broom, who says about the whisky: “It’s a jewel”. That probably says it all.
