Forget all the prejudices and read on: this is a quality red Lambrusco with a slight sweetness, and not the indifferent confirmation party starter that brutally ushers defenseless teenagers into the ranks of adults.
Gavioli Lambrusco is produced from 85% lambrusco di grasparossa di castelvetro, 10% lambrusco di sorbara, 5% malbo gentile. Amabile means lovable/friendly in Italian; an expression that fits well with these editions with a slight fruity sweetness,; so NOT dessert-sweet!
The bubbles are captured via the charmat method (pressure tank), which imitates a classic second fermentation, but in a large tank instead of the individual bottle. The entire tank is then bottled under pressure. This results in a significantly more affordable wine that still manages to present itself with fine, persistent bubbles.
This lambrusco is kept in a fresh, slightly sweet style. Cute as in what? The sweetness has a fresh and delicate expression with a musty quality that is very refreshing.
The color is deep with purple hues, but the aroma and taste are packed with raspberries, blackberries and fully ripe blackcurrants. There is a good balance in the taste, where the small hint of fruit acid keeps the sweetness perfectly under control.
It is excellent as an aperitif, but also try it with fruit, a bowl of berries, possibly marinated with a little sugar and possibly a dash of balsamic vinegar.
Enjoyed chilled in the fridge in its youth – this is not the wine that should sit for two years in the wine cellar.
