Cocchi Americano is a so-called “aromatized wine”, which since 1891 has been produced according to Giulio Cocchi’s original recipe. The name “Americano” has a double meaning: that the alcohol is made bitter (“amaricato” in Italian) by the herbs, and as a reference to the American custom of drinking vermouth with ice and sparkling water.
This “pink” edition is made on the basis of red wine, and among the ingredients you will find rose petals, ginger, saffron, vanilla, bitter orange and gentian. It is typically drunk as an aperitif, and on the label you can see the characteristic logo with the rooster, which symbolizes the aperitivo’s ability to “wake up” the appetite.
Colour: Deep ruby red.
Scent: Oranges, roses and nutmeg.
Tasting notes: Fine sweetness that is kept in check by notes of ginger, orange peel and slight bitterness.
Serving suggestion: Enjoy it over ice with sparkling water and a twist of grapefruit.
Cocchi was founded by the young confectioner, Giulio Cocchi, in 1891. Ever since, the company has been making sparkling wine, vermouth and other flavored wines in Piedmont, always with quality at the forefront. The good track record, with 121 years of uninterrupted operation, got Cocchi entered in Italy’s National Register of Historic Companies in 2012. Among other things, the company has helped lift Barolo Chinato out of the mists of oblivion and was one of the driving forces behind vermouth’s renaissance. The current head of Cocchi, Roberto Bava, has also been elected president of the Vermouth di Torino Institute, which brings together a number of producers with the common goal of ensuring the identity and continued survival of Torino vermouth.
