Château Bélair (later Château Bélair-Monange), which overlooks the Dordogne river valley, began its remarkable journey in winemaking in the 17th century. In 1691, the property was already known for its wines, which were sought after both locally and abroad. The property was also owned by the Canolle de Lescours family for over 200 years.
In 1916, the Canolle family sold the property to Mr. and Mrs. Dubois-Challon, who continued the proud traditions, which, among other things, meant that in 1959 the château was ranked as Premier Grand Cru Classé B”. In 2003, the widow Dubois-Challon dies and since there are no heirs, she bequeaths the castle to the then manager Pascal Delbeck.
In 2008, Christian and Edouard Moueix fulfilled the ambition of their ancestor, Jean-Pierre Moueix, by acquiring Château Bélair from Pascal Delbeck. On the same occasion, they renamed the château Bélair-Monange in honor of Anne-Adéle Monange, mother of Jean-Pierre Moueix. A complete restoration of the castle, vineyards, cellars and production facilities.
In 2012, the property was expanded with plots from the Château Magdelaine property, owned by the Moueix family since 1952. It can also be mentioned that Edouard Moueix, his wife and their 2 children live in the beautiful castle, which was originally built in 1750 on the site of a old fortress.
With the potential of the castle’s 12 hectares of fantastically situated fields and the status of former times in mind, there is no doubt about Moueix’s goal, namely to challenge the area’s two highest classified wines on quality parameters again – and who knows, maybe one day also on the official ranking . It will be exciting to follow.
