Ricossa Barbaresco originates from fields around the town of the same name located near Alba in breathtaking Piedmont with its rolling hills and views of the snowy Alps. Like its fellow Barolo, this wine is produced exclusively on Nebbiolo, hand-harvested in early autumn.
After a temperature-controlled vinification, the wine is aged for a good year in large oak barrels before further bottling in cool cellars below the town of Priocca: it takes time to soften the temperament of the Nebbiolo grape.
Ricossa Barbaresco is on the modernist/traditionalist scale (loved and hated…) somewhere comfortably in between. Here, vinification is done with modern equipment, but fast, intense extraction and small, new casks are avoided, so that the wine retains its grape identity and sense of place.
Despite a crisp structure, this is not a dark, gloomy wine. Nebbiolo does not produce deeply colored wines, but manages to combine power and elegance. Aroma and taste exhibit a very complex array of red fruit, leather, dried flowers and black tea. Dryness is balanced by fullness and the ripeness of the grape material.
Ricossa Barbaresco is a classic food wine that is at its best when served with lovingly prepared meat; like meat stews that spend hours rather than minutes on the stove; simmering dishes from Piedmontese cuisine are self-written.
We recommend a spacious ‘Burgundy glass’ and a serving temperature of around 17-18°.
