Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao Tropical is a tropical interpretation of Maison Ferrand’s classic curaçao, created to combine the house’s historically inspired liqueur style with a more distinctly Caribbean identity. The product comes from Maison Ferrand, but this edition is, according to the producer, entirely born in Barbados and takes shape at Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery, a Barbadian distillery with around 130 years of history. It builds on the work Alexandre Gabriel and David Wondrich did with the original Ferrand Dry Curaçao, but now moves more clearly toward the islands’ traditions of citrus and cane spirits.
In production, the starting point is laraha orange peel, which is first infused and then slowly distilled. Alongside this, a botanical infusion is made with vanilla, spices, and orange on a rum base, which is then blended with rum distilled on site in both pot still and column still. The rum is aged between two and five years, and the blend is further rounded out with Barbadian cane sugar, an important element in the softer and more tropical profile. The product is bottled at 40% ABV in a 700 ml format.
In flavour, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao Tropical moves between classic orange liqueur and rum-driven cocktail ingredient. The producer describes the nose with notes of rum, sugar cane, and a touch of nutmeg, followed by lively citrus tones and hints of jasmine and saffron. On the palate, bitter orange is at the centre, supported by sugar cane, a light molasses character, dark chocolate, mandarin, orange, and lemon peel. The overall impression therefore feels richer and more exotic than a classic dry curaçao, yet without losing its structure or cocktail-friendly dryness.
This is a liqueur that is especially well suited to rum-based cocktails, and the producer itself highlights the Mai Tai as an almost obvious serve. At the same time, it also works very well neat or over ice, which makes it useful both behind the bar and for anyone looking for a more Caribbean-leaning orange liqueur with greater depth than a standard triple sec.
