About Johnnie Walker
Johnnie Walker originates from the Scottish town of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire and was founded by the merchant John Walker. Johnni Walker is today the most popular blended Scotch whiskey in the world. In 1825 Walker began selling blended rum, brandy, gin and whiskey. However, it was to quickly develop into whiskey only. Soon he began to put his own name on the labels and sold them as Walker’s Kilmarnock Whisky. John Walker died in 1857.
The brand became popular, but after Walker’s death it was his son Alexander ‘Alec’ Walker and grandson Alexander Walker II who were largely responsible for establishing Johnnie Walker in the market. Blended Scotch whiskeys were lighter and sweeter in character than many Single Malts and were more accessible and marketable to a wider audience.
Alexander Walker introduced the brand’s signature square bottle in 1860. This meant more bottles that fit in the same space and fewer broken bottles. An important factor for Johnni Walker was the arrival of a railway in Kilmarnock that transported goods to merchant ships traveling around the world.
