Finca Montico Verdejo is an elegant and characterful white wine from Rueda in Castilla y León. The wine is produced by the historic winery Marqués de Riscal, founded in 1858 and today one of Spain’s most renowned names. With Finca Montico, they showcase the finest expression of the Verdejo grape in Rueda’s unique terroir.
The grapes come from the historic Pago del Montico vineyard, where old vines grow in poor, stony soils. This results in small yields with great concentration and pronounced minerality. Harvest is carried out by hand at the end of September, and the grapes are quickly cooled to preserve their aromatic profile. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and then aged for several months on its lees. This “sur lie” maturation adds body, texture and roundness while maintaining freshness. A small portion of the wine is also matured in large French oak vats, providing extra complexity without overpowering the varietal character.
The result is a wine with a pale straw-yellow colour and subtle green reflections. The bouquet is expressive and distinctly Verdejo, with notes of white flowers, citrus, green apple, fennel and a hint of minerality. On the palate it is fresh and well-balanced, with lively acidity and a creamy texture from the lees ageing. The finish is long, elegant and aromatic. Alcohol content is around 13%.
Finca Montico Verdejo is best served well chilled at 8–10 °C. It pairs beautifully with fish and seafood, grilled white fish, chicken dishes, salads, mild cheeses, or as a refined match to Iberian ham. The wine holds the classification Gran Vino de Rueda, signifying grapes from older vines with very low yields – a clear hallmark of quality within the appellation.
