Château Beauregard 2017 is a classic Pomerol with a more elegant and refined style than many more powerful Right Bank Bordeaux wines. In the glass, it moves between dark and red fruits, with notes of warm blueberries, plum compote, cherry preserve, dried roses, black tea, and cigar box, along with hints of chocolate, hazelnuts, damp earth, and herbs. The overall impression is medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannic structure, a creamy texture, and a long, perfumed finish.
The production is ambitious and highly precise. The estate covers 17.5 hectares of clay and gravel soils on the edge of the Pomerol plateau and is organically certified. The 2017 vintage was made from an unusual blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, partly as a result of the frost challenges of the vintage. The grapes were hand-harvested between 13 September and 8 October 2017, sorted both manually and optically, cooled to 6°C, and vinified plot by plot in temperature-controlled raw concrete vats. Fermentation and maceration lasted 3–5 weeks, the best lots underwent malolactic fermentation in new barrels, and the wine was then aged for 18 months in French oak, of which 50% was new oak. Yields were a low 26 hl/ha, and the alcohol level finished at 13%.
At the table, Château Beauregard 2017 pairs beautifully with dishes that offer both texture and depth, such as entrecôte, lamb, veal, duck breast, game, mushroom dishes, pasta, and aged cheeses. It is also a wine that often benefits from one to two hours in a decanter when opened young or in its early stage of maturity, as this helps it soften and open up aromatically.
