A blend of 91% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, 2018 la Fleur-Petrus has a medium garnet purple color and a slightly closed nose to begin, soon unfolding to reveal earthy hints of black truffles, mossy tree bark and damp earth, over a core of plum preserves, wild blueberries and currants, plus a fragrant whiff of menthol lilacs. The medium to full-bodied palate has the most gorgeous, velvety texture with well-knit freshness that gives a boost to the densely packed black fruit and earthy layers, finishing with a seductive perfume. Breathtaking!
The 2018 vintage consists of all 3 parcels of LFP, all located within 1,500 feet of each other, at the highest elevation of Pomerol along with the other top estates in the appellation. LFP 1, the original block, consists of large gravelly soil with an iron-rich subsoil, drained by its northern slope. The great elegance of the wine is what made LFP’s reputation for quality and gave it the distinction of being Pomerol’s seductress, if you like. LFP 2 is located in the center of Pomerol and consists of gravelly clay which, together with the greater heat received by the block in question, results in a wine with enormous suppleness and dark fruit character. LFP 3, the southern plot, has a remarkably fine, deep gravelly soil with natural drainage to the south and produces a velvety, dense and structured wine.
