Schola Sarmenti – Armentino Primitivo-Negroamaro Salento IGT 75 cl.
Puglia – Italy
Schola Sarmenti Armentino is a rich and characterful red from Salento in southern Puglia. It is a fifty–fifty blend of Negroamaro and Primitivo from older vines trained in the traditional Alberello system, which naturally limits yields and concentrates flavour. The result is a wine with depth, warmth and an impressively ripe fruit profile. Alcohol sits around 14%, giving a pleasant warmth without making the wine feel heavy.
In the glass, Armentino shows a deep ruby-red colour. The nose is intense and almost dense, with aromas of plum, black cherry and sour cherry, layered with hints of overripe fruit, jammy notes and gentle spice. On the palate it is full-bodied and fleshy, packed with juicy dark fruit, supported by a firm yet well-polished tannic structure and a long, warm, slightly spicy finish. It feels powerful and concentrated, yet remains surprisingly easy and enjoyable to drink.
Armentino is an excellent partner for grilled and braised meats, hearty pasta dishes with tomato and meat sauces, pizza, lamb, spicy sausages and aged cheeses – any dish that calls for a wine with both generous fruit and solid structure.
Schola Sarmenti is based in Nardò, in the heart of Salento. The winery focuses on native grape varieties such as Primitivo, Negroamaro, Susumaniello and Fiano, often from old bush-trained vines. Vineyard work is done by hand with great respect for the environment and for local tradition, aiming to bottle the true character of Salento. The house style is generous and fruit-driven, yet always balanced and fresh – clearly reflected in the personality of Armentino.
