AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc is a characterful white wine from Swartland, South Africa, crafted by the passionate winemaker Adi Badenhorst. Coming from a family deeply rooted in viticulture, Adi has gained experience in renowned wine regions such as the Rhône Valley, Bordeaux, and New Zealand. In 2008, he and his cousin Hein purchased the Kalmoesfontein farm in the heart of Swartland, restoring an old 1930s wine cellar. Since then, Adi has been a leading figure in “The Swartland Revolution” — a movement dedicated to artisanal, natural winemaking without unnecessary intervention.
This Chenin Blanc is made from old bush vines that produce low yields but highly concentrated fruit. The grapes are carefully handpicked and undergo spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, preserving the authentic character of the fruit. A portion of the must is fermented in old French oak barrels, and the wine matures for seven months on the lees, adding depth and texture.
In the glass, the wine reveals enticing aromas of fresh green and yellow apples, ripe melon, pear, wild herbs, and a hint of toasted nuts. The palate is vibrant and full-bodied, with a beautifully balanced acidity, juicy fruit notes, and a subtle minerality leading to an elegant and refreshing finish. There is a natural energy to this wine that reflects both its terroir and the winemaker’s philosophy.
AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc is highly versatile at the table. It pairs wonderfully with grilled fish, seafood dishes, creamy pastas, chicken, or simply as a lively glass enjoyed on its own. It is a dry wine with an alcohol content of around 13.5%, and while delicious in its youth, it also has the potential to develop beautifully over a few years.
With his uncompromising approach to winemaking, Adi Badenhorst has created a Chenin Blanc that is at once classic and uniquely his own — a true celebration of South Africa’s potential and the craft of authentic winemaking.
