Nikka Whisky – Single Malt Miyagikyo 10 Years Old 70 cl. 45%

Japanese Single Malt Whisky

Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt 10 Years Old is a Japanese single malt with a clear focus on elegance, fruit, and finesse. It comes from Miyagikyo Distillery, Nikka’s second distillery, which was founded in 1969 by Masataka Taketsuru in a green valley west of Sendai. The distillery was established to create a more refined and complex whisky, and that style comes through very clearly in this bottling.

Its production reflects the distinctive Miyagikyo house style. Nikka uses pot stills with bulging necks and upward lyne arms, together with indirect steam-heated distillation, which produces a softer, more floral, and more fruit-driven spirit. In the 10-year-old expression, the whisky is matured for at least ten years and bottled at 45% ABV in a 700 ml format.

On the nose, it shows notes of apple, citrus, and sweet vanilla, with a ripe and inviting fruit character. The palate is richer and more developed than the younger standard expression, offering fruity sweetness, malt sweetness, and elegant cask influence, followed by a lightly bitter finish that adds structure and depth. The overall impression is harmonious rather than forceful, and that is exactly where this whisky shines: in the precise balance between ripe fruit, soft vanilla, sweet malt, and fine oak.

This is a whisky best enjoyed neat, ideally with a little time in the glass. It is particularly suited to drinkers who appreciate Japanese whisky with more fruit, florality, and elegance than smoke and weight. Stylistically, it works beautifully after dinner, but also in quieter tasting settings where you want a whisky with clear maturity without becoming heavy or overpowering.
