The “secretary bird” is excellent value for money and represents South Africa’s wild wildlife in the best possible way, here perhaps in a less “wild” version.
Winemaker Robin Naylor in the Western Cape, while inspecting the vineyards, found a secretary bird wandering between the vines and decided that the wine from these juice-stressed grapes should be called “Secretary Bird”.
The raw material for this full-bodied Merlot originates from older vineyards in the Wellington/Swartland area, which has low rainfall and consists of granitic soils
Secretary Bird Merlot is a dark and full-bodied wine with ripe sweet fruit on the nose and a slightly spicy note. In the mouth, it has the predominant element of dark berry fruit and a chocolate-like character, as well as good fatness.
Enjoy this beautiful wine at approx. 16° and preferably in the company of stronger dishes from the everyday kitchen.
