Waterford Antigo is a refined Cape Bordeaux-style red wine from the acclaimed Waterford Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The wine is named after the unique red clay and granite soils of the “Antigo” vineyard, which give the wine depth, purity, and polished tannins.
This elegant blend is primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller portions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and occasionally Petit Verdot or Malbec, depending on the vintage. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel before being matured for approximately 20 months in French oak barrels. The result is a balanced, structured wine with a distinctive sense of place.
On the nose, Antigo offers aromas of blackcurrant, ripe cherry, graphite, violets, cedarwood, and subtle herbal notes. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, layered finish featuring dark berries, mocha, and spice.
Waterford Antigo is ideal with grilled meats, lamb dishes, beef stews, and aged cheeses. It drinks well now but will reward 5–8 years of cellaring.
Waterford Estate is a prestigious winery founded in the 1990s by Jeremy Ord and Kevin Arnold (formerly winemaker at Rust en Vrede). The estate is renowned for its sustainable practices, terroir-driven wines, and classic winemaking approach. It is beautifully situated in the Blaauwklippen Valley, one of the most respected areas in Stellenbosch.
Waterford has built its reputation on elegant Bordeaux-style red wines and top-quality whites. Their philosophy emphasizes balance, finesse, and a deep respect for nature. Antigo is part of their terroir series, aiming to express the character of specific soils and vineyard blocks.
