Starting with a pure base spirit, Buller Wines’ own 50-year-old Muscat wine is added, giving the gin its golden color and fantastic flavor. After that, juniper, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, raisins, vanilla, and orange are incorporated, creating the gin’s impressive aromatic character and incredible complexity.
Since its inception, Australian winery R.L. Buller & Son has evolved from being – one might almost say – an ordinary producer of fortified and table wines to achieving an almost cult-like status within the world of fortified wines. Buller has specialized in a unique style of fortified wine made using the traditional Spanish solera system for sherry. The finished wines are usually at least 10 years old on average, while specialties like Calliope approach an average of 50 years. And the results are outstanding – many have tried to replicate Buller’s artistry, both in Australia and around the world, but so far without great success. As Robert Parker wrote in The Wine Advocate: “You have to taste them to believe it!!”
Buller Wines was founded in 1921 in Rutherglen, northeastern Victoria, by Reginald Langdon Buller. From humble beginnings nearly 100 years ago, Buller Wines today spans several wine regions, including Rutherglen, King Valley, Swan Hill, and Heathcote. The vision has always been to create a world-class winery that expresses the unique terroir of the region—and that vision has been realized.
The 22-hectare Buller Wines Estate Vineyard was planted by Reginald Langdon Buller in the early 1920s. Even today, more than half of the original vines still produce intensely concentrated, low-yield grapes. Rutherglen is internationally recognized as one of the world’s premier regions for fortified wines.
