Stauning Smoke is the essence of the distillery’s innovative New Nordic whiskey philosophy: A mildly smoky single malt whiskey brewed on pure West Jutland barley, which is malted on an open floor. Smoked over locally harvested peat and heather from the countryside around Stauning. Double-distilled in small pot stills over an open fire. Aged in 1st Fill wine and spirit casks.
The result is an elegant and refined whisky, which with its gentle smoky taste and complex character exudes the dunes, the heath and the wind by the North Sea. A full-blooded terroir whisky.
Peat is thousands of years old vegetation that is pressed together in dense layers and used as fuel.
This fuel is not used for heat, but to make tasty smoke for the whisky. The peat gets its character from the landscape it is created from. That is why Stauning only uses fuel from local peat bogs.
We mix the peat with dried heather plants that have been harvested on the heathland around Ringkøbing Fjord. Heather gives the whiskey a mild and aromatic smoky taste.
