Umberto Rosso Superiore is the top expression in the Ulrich range and a red vermouth made to be sipped slowly—ideally as a finale to a good meal. It is built on a 100% Cortese wine base from Piedmont, giving it a clean, wine-driven backbone, while a carefully selected set of botanicals lifts it into a deep, spicy, lightly balsamic style. The profile is rich and concentrated, yet surprisingly drinkable, with a clear bittersweet balance.
What sets Umberto Rosso Superiore apart is the treatment of the botanicals: after extraction in alcohol, they are allowed to mature in wood for about 6 months, which smooths the edges, adds depth, and brings a more “polished” texture. On the palate, cinchona (quina bark) and hyssop play leading roles, delivering a grown-up, aromatic bitterness with herbal tension.
In the glass it shows a dark amber/mahogany colour, with a fresh, spicy nose where you can pick up citrus oils, herbs, warm spices and a subtle sherry-/wine-like note. The palate is intense, full and complex: rounded sweet fruit, warming spice and a long, elegant bitterness on the finish—equally compelling neat or in cocktails.
Serving
Serve chilled—ideally over ice with an orange twist. It also shines in vermouth-forward cocktails when you want extra depth and a more pronounced bitter, herbal complexity.
The producer
Umberto Rosso Superiore is released under the Domenico Ulrich name by Distilleria Santa Teresa (Fratelli Marolo) in Piedmont. Marolo is particularly known for its distilling craft, and with the Ulrich range they work from a historic vermouth tradition: the recipe is rooted in an 1854 formula, rediscovered and refined into a modern interpretation. The vermouth is also dedicated to King Umberto I, reflected in its style: structured, intense and more “regal” in character than many softer, sweeter vermouths.
