In the soft, hilly landscape of Piedmont lies the Asti district, which is unique in having the barbera grape as the main red wine grape. Where the wines from this grape used to be mainly drunk locally, the distribution of Barbera wines has increased rapidly in recent years, which is completely in line with the quality improvement that the wines have undergone.
Calcareous and clayey fields in the Nizza Monferrato and Agliano zones form the basis for this wine – zones where the grape achieves both maturity and a characteristic expression. The vinification took place at a state-of-the-art winery in Priocca by experienced oenologists. No small oak casks were used for this wine, so the grape’s imprint is the wine’s expression.
The result in the finished wine is a pronounced purity and a fruity clarity that is almost never seen in wines at this price level. Ricossa Barbera d’Asti is a youthful wine with firm, dense fruit nuances of blue plums and cherries and the refreshing, grape-typical acidity that calls for simple, tasty food – preferably with an Italian twist. The wine has good intensity, only light body, but with great, mouth-watering freshness.
Serve the wine slightly below room temperature, around 16°.
The wine is ready to drink now, but will also be able to age for another few years.
