Quinta do Portal – Vintage 2005 Porto 75 CL 20%

Douro Valley Port – Portugal

Quinta do Portal is a family-owned port winery that benefited from the changes in the law when Portugal joined the EC in 1986 and it became legal to store and ship port from the Douro Valley itself, breaking up the oligopoly of the big port wineries in Vila Nova de Gaia and for always changed the market structure in favor of the smaller producers in the valley.

2005 is a good but underappreciated vintage that only ended happily due to some rain before the harvest. Until then, it had been so dry that both sugar maturity and phenolic maturity were lacking until shortly before harvest. All this turned on whether to harvest beautiful, healthy grapes for the vintage ports. This vintage port wine is a blend of touriga nacional, touriga franca and tinta roríz from Quinta do Portal itself, in the butter hole of the Pinhão valley.

With 15 years behind it, this vintage port now appears slightly rounded without being mature. You thus get a harmonious and concentrated wine that, at an extremely reasonable price, offers a wonderful drinking experience and an insight into the life course of a good vintage port wine. Aroma and taste have full, dark berries in a robust style with good fruitiness and a nice slat of ripe tannins and distinguished length in the aftertaste, where slate minerals are also felt; right after the book…

Enjoy Quinta do Portal VIntage 2005 with chocolate desserts, with tangy blue cheese or on its own, with the port wine disciples. Remember to enjoy the wine in spacious glasses, so that you also get the scent experience.

We recommend a serving temperature of 17-18°.

Like all vintage port wines, it is bottled without filtration, and decanting is therefore mandatory if you want to have a good experience with the wine. This is done in good time before it is served, so as not to lose face in front of the guests…
