Paul John Christmas Edition 2021 is an Indian single malt from Goa, bottled at 46%. This is the 4th release in Paul John’s annual festive series, created to capture the feel of Christmas in a glass. The whisky is initially matured in ex-bourbon casks and then finished in a mix of Port and Madeira casks, bringing layers of fruity richness, spice and a touch of gentle smoke.
Producer – Paul John, Goa
Paul John is one of the leading “new world” single malt producers. Using Indian six-row barley, traditional copper pot stills and tropical maturation in Goa, the distillery is known for oily, flavourful whiskies with plenty of character. For the Christmas Editions, specially selected casks with wine and dessert-wine influence (and light peat) are chosen to enhance the festive profile.
Nose
The nose is warm, dessert-like and festive:
caramel and butterscotch fudge
orange marmalade, candied orange peel and red berries
raisins, plum and fruitcake notes
a hint of coconut, malty sweetness and brown sugar
all wrapped in delicate spice and a wisp of smoke
Palate
On the palate, the whisky is creamy, medium-bodied and very expressive:
rich sweetness of toffee, butterscotch and vanilla
bursts of tropical fruit, orange, cranberries and dark berries
baking spices – cinnamon, ginger, clove, allspice and a touch of pepper
gentle, barley-driven smoke and malty backbone
a distinct impression of Christmas cake with nuts and dried fruit
Finish & serving
The finish is long and comforting:
cocoa, milk chocolate and soft caramel
lingering light peat, festive spices and dried berries
a final lift of orange zest and subtle oak
Best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass, especially after dinner or alongside chocolate desserts, Christmas sweets or mature cheeses.
