Moscato d’asti is the sweet, sparkling wine from Piedmont in Northern Italy made from the highly aromatic moscato grape, which gives the wine its sweet-spicy and expressive nutmeg aroma. Only moscato bianco may be used, which is the best and most complex variety of the grape – also called muscat blanc a petit grains when we come west of the Alps. In Piedmont, the grape possesses a lovely acidity, which is imperative when making successful, sweet wine.
Scanavino Moscato d’Asti has a sweet fruitiness that is kept completely fresh by the youthful acidity of the grapes and a little carbonation that gives the wine its sparkling character. With its low alcohol percentage of 5.5% vol., it appeals widely – from the clergy in Tehran to the wreath cake on New Year’s Eve. Despite its great intensity, the wine feels light and elegant at the same time.
It is suitable for fresh fruit, fruit salad and also wreath cake, which with its intense sweetness otherwise kills almost any wine. And by the way, it is one of the very few wines that can actually be enjoyed with both sorbet and ice cream. When it’s berry season with strawberries and raspberries, moscato d’asti is the perfect accompaniment. Also not bad served as a terrace accessory when the rare heat wave hits the nation.
Enjoyed very cold from the fridge, which numerically is around 4-5°.
