Malteco Ron
Rum specialist Marco Savio of Savio Trading Srl in Aosta, Italy is the founder and owner of the Ron Malteco brand. Originally, the rum was produced by the Licorera Quezalteca distillery in Quetzaltenango, which belongs to the Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala group. But when Diageo took over 50% of the company in 2011, it was decided to only use the rum produced for its two rum varieties, Zacapa and Botran.
Although Malteco Ron is a Guatemala-styled rum, it is actually a Panamanian rum produced by Varela Hermanos Bodegas de America SA. The recipe is made in Guatemala, where Malteco Ron was originally produced. The recipe is from Guatemala, and the rum is continuously quality-controlled by the ‘Associacion Maestros Roneros de Guatemala’. Varela Hermanos is located in the town of Pesé in the southern part of central Panama. In 1908, the then owner, Don José Varela Blanco, established the first sugar factory. Later, in 1936, the rum factory opened, which has been producing high-quality rum ever since.Varela Hermanos is the largest supplier of rum to the domestic market in Panama, supplying more than 90% of all rum to the locals. The rum is distilled in column stills and is therefore in the elegant, light style, which is also characteristic of rum from Guatemala. The rum is aged in 220 liter used bourbon casks made of white, American oak. The barrels give the rum adequate contact with the cask, where smaller barrels would give too much contact and larger barrels too little.
