This is a quality port that will delight any port enthusiast with excellent complexity, balance and drinking pleasure.
Kopke draws on the house’s century-long experience and stocks oxidative barrel-aged port wines, where they belong to a small, exclusive elite. Kopke’s tawnies have a complex and acid-fresh aroma profile that makes them pleasant to drink over time.
Colheita is, in contrast to the blended port wines, a tawny from one and the same vintage, i.e. a ‘vintage tawny’. For a colheita, a minimum of 7 years of aging in wooden casks is required before release, and there is no upper limit to the age of aging. This Colheita 2006 is aged in old, 550 liter oak barrels for 17 years before bottling; a period of time that has left its mark on the wine to that extent.
Prunes, raisins, varnish, caramel, walnuts, a little smoke and orange peel are matched by a golden acidity, so that the whole appears with the right weight. The aftertaste has exemplary length and the sweetness of the wine (approx. 100 g/l) appears beautifully integrated.
Enjoy this tawny as a cozy wine or, for example, with crêpes suzette, caramel rim, nut tarts, etc. – and then it is brilliant for Christmas baking when the season is right for it.
After opening, the wine is stable for up to 4-6 weeks – possibly stored in a refrigerator. After that, the wine just slowly gets weaker and loses a bit of focus as the days go by, so don’t panic if there are a few glasses left in an open bottle…
