The district
When they came to Italy, the Greeks were so impressed by Italy as a wine country – and especially by the many wine districts – that they
called the country Oenotria – the land of wine. The production of wine therefore goes back very far. Before the Greeks, the Etruscans were known for their skill in wine, and later the Romans helped to systematize the production and trade in wine.
Wine production has been of great importance to Italian agriculture throughout the Middle Ages, and this continues to this day. As was also the case in many other European countries, the church – with its many monasteries – has had a great influence on the spread and development of the wine tradition. Approx. 792,000 ha. vineyards are distributed all over the country. The northernmost areas such as Piedmont, Veneto and Tuscany are the best known. Areas such as Apulia, Sicily and Friuli are emerging.
The producer
In 1966 Alfons Walcher founded the family distillery “Maso” in Turmbachhof in Alto Adige in South Tyrol. The distillery is located near Appiano on the wine road in Alto Adige, and the place has been in the family’s possession for now 9 generations. It was also here that Alfons Walcher distilled his first grappa and brandy – all from a small, old-fashioned still kettle. Grappa and other types of spirits from Walcher are made with grapes from the wine producer Alois Lageder, with whom they have collaborated for several years. The Alto Adige area benefits from perfect climatic conditions – the combination of approx. 280 sunny days a year and cool nights mean that the grapes here develop a quite special complexity. Today it is the son, Theodor Walcher, who is responsible for the distilling and production at Walcher. His many years of expertise mean that the company’s products are today on the top quality shelf within spirits. The Walcher family makes both conventional and organic products. These are primarily products belonging to the latter category, which we have included in our assortment.
