G.D. Vajra Barolo Coste di Rose DOCG (ECO) 2020 75 cl.

Piemonte – Italy

DESCRIPTION: Coste di Rose is one of the best-kept secrets of the Barolo denomination. It is located on a steep slope that rises from Bosco della Fava and drops steeply toward Monforte d’Alba, hidden from the road that leads to Barolo but identifiable by the Librocedrus decurrens at its summit. The sandstone dune in which our vines take root makes Barolo Coste di Rose unique: on the nose, notes of cherry and rose petals, mint, and sweet spices, a silky tannin, and a juicy sip.

The 2020 vintage is characterized by remarkable aromatic intensity marked by fruity and mineral notes and an excellent aging potential.

VARIETY: 100% Nebbiolo.

VINEYARDS AND TERROIR: Coste di Rose MGA, Barolo municipality.

CULTIVATION: In 1971, Aldo Vaira, then a university student, was one of the first in Piedmont to embrace organic farming. The vineyards have been protected by spontaneous cover cropping for almost 50 years. This allows for better aeration of the subsoil as well as better protection from erosion. The estate’s vineyards are certified.

With an incredible labor ratio per hectare, viticulture in our company is a practice of love and attention. Research has also focused in recent years on monitoring and enriching the biodiversity of flora and fauna in the vineyards, fields, and forests of the estate.

VINTAGE: The 2020 vintage was characterized by early budding, late flowering, and slow, progressive maturation. These elements have made this vintage one of the longest and latest harvests of the last decade.

Early snowfalls and moderate rains throughout the years have preserved water reserves and favored balanced phenolic maturation. The Langhe, spared from the frosts of April and the scorching heat of June, however, suffered from the severe hailstorm on September 5th.

Low yields since flowering, slow maturation, late harvest, excellent phenolic maturation, and a backbone of great acidity: all point to the exceptional vintage of 2013.

Before us lies all the potential of a great vintage.

HARVEST AND VINIFICATION: In 2020, the grapes were harvested on October 18th, destemmed, and vinified in truncated cone-shaped tanks. The vinification lasted a total of 25 days. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place in steel in the spring following alcoholic fermentation.

AGING: 28 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 25 and 40 hectoliters. Bottling took place on July 25, 2022.

TASTING NOTES: Classic bright garnet color. On the nose, aromas of dog rose, wet stone, mint, sweet spices, white pepper, and sweet marasca emerge from the glass. The wine is still very young on the palate, with a savory nerve, softly enveloped by fresh and persistent red fruit in the finish.
