Falanghina del Sannio is made from 100% Falanghina, which is obtained from vineyards near Sannio. The must is fermented cool (16-18 degrees) in steel tanks and is then matured for 5 months on its “scythe” in the same type of tank. A vinification that prioritizes freshness, crispness and charm – and it has succeeded in full!
The wine has a nice, glossy, golden color with a greenish tinge. The fragrance is surprisingly delicate, clean and aromatic, with delicious, appealing ethereal and salty notes, as well as nuances of citrus fruits, apples and apricots. In the taste, it has plenty of bite, with delicious fruit nuances and a good balance between dryness and fruit sweetness. It ends slightly minerally and with a nice crispness. Perfect as a welcome, with pasta or risotto, seafood, fish and vegetable dishes. Try it also for white mold cheese, preferably on goat’s milk.
Feudi di San Gregorio is undoubtedly one of the most well-known and reputable producers in Campania. The winery is located near the village of Sorbo Serpico (province of Avellino), in the middle of the Irpinia district, considered one of the best districts in Campania. The mountainous and incredibly varied landscape with its, by southern Italian conditions, relatively cool climate and distinctive volcanic subsoil, offers not only aromatic, delicate and unique wines, but also some of Italy’s best vegetables, fruits and nuts.
The winery was founded in 1986, when two families from the Irpinia area together bought an older vineyard with associated vineyards, most planted with over 60-70 year old vines. Right from the start, the stated goal of Feudi di San Gregorio has been to produce top wines in keeping with the area’s age-old traditions. In particular, the desire to utilize the characteristics of the local terroir/each vineyard to produce unique wines has been high on the wish list. Therefore, a thorough analysis of the soil and microclimate was immediately carried out on all parcels in order to determine where each of the classic grape varieties would perform at their best.
At Feudi di San Gregorio, which today also owns the Ognissole winery in Puglia, there is thus no compromise on quality: Every one of the company’s wines must reflect a product made according to all the rules of art and with respect for nature, express the distinctive character of the field and the grape as well as tell a story about the district. All with the aim of providing the greatest experience in the glass!
The Falanghina grape variety is one of the oldest in the Campania region and is believed to be of Greek origin. During recent excavations in Pompeii, seeds from the Falanghina grape have just been found, which shows that it was already cultivated in Roman times. It thrives very well in a volcanic soil, preferably on high-lying fields and near the sea, which brings a bit of coolness. Here it achieves a good balance between freshness, fruit, structure and minerality. For several years, the Falanghina grape was somewhat in the shadow of more modern white wine grapes, but in recent years it has experienced a well-deserved renaissance. Among the districts where Falanghina thrives best, one can i.a. mention Campi Flegrei (with the island of Procida) east of Naples, DOC Falerno del Massico northwest of Naples and not least the Sannio area, northeast of Naples, where exactly the Falanghina del Sannio DOC is found (DOC from 2011).
Before 2011, Falanghina del Sannio belonged to the DOCs Guardia Sanframondi (Guardiolo), Sant’Agata dei Goti, Solopaca and Taburno, but today these are considered subzones of the Falanghina del Sannio DOC. The district covers approx. 1025 ha. and includes white wines, Spumante or Spumante di Qualità (fermentation in pressure tank), Spumante di Qualità Metodo Classico (2nd fermentation in bottle), Vendemmia Tardiva (late harvest grapes) and Passito (dried grapes). All these wines must contain min. 85% Falanghina.
