Errazuriz – Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve 2016 75 cl.

Aconcagua Valley – Chile

The 2016 vintage of Don Maximiano is a year in which you can truly appreciate what a cool growing season means for the wine. The result is a unique and captivating wine with strikingly perfect balance and elegance. Inspired by the classic Bordeaux tradition, Errázuriz enhances the wine’s complexity by adding a small proportion of Cabernet Franc and Merlot to the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Beautiful aromas of roasted coffee beans, cocoa and blackcurrant intertwine with notes of fresh cranberries and cherry pie. On the palate, intense red cherries, blackberries and blueberries dominate in a wonderfully inviting wine. Great tension and concentration with fine tannins and a fantastic balance that marks a wine with remarkable potential.

“It’s an ultra classical Aconcagua Cabernet-based blend with good ripeness while keeping the freshness, and it has generous oak that does not overwhelm but makes the wine softer and spicier. It has some fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins.”

“Noble, almost Bordeaux-like on the nose with nuances of dark berries, cedar wood, plum and cocoa-rich chocolate. On the palate there is a striking lightness. Here there is far more finesse than power, and the distinct notes of blackcurrant and blueberry fruit give the wine at once a discreet sweetness and a noticeable acidity. It does not quite reach the level of the greatest crus in Bordeaux, but it comes close.”

Since 1870, Viña Errázuriz has been at the forefront of Chilean wine production, founded by the visionary Don Maximiano Errázuriz in the Aconcagua Valley. Here family heritage, innovation and sustainability come together to create wines that delight wine lovers all over the world. While most Chilean vineyards were still being planted close to the capital, Santiago, Don Maximiano looked further north. After travelling 100 kilometres on horseback over two days, he discovered the Aconcagua Valley. There he declared that “from the best land, the best wine shall come.” That vision is still alive more than 150 years later.

The Chileans made history in 2004 when Viña Errázuriz, at a now famous blind tasting, stood out in competition with some of the most prestigious wines from Italy and France. Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve and KAI secured top positions. This milestone was followed by a series of 22 international tastings that demonstrated the consistency and outstanding quality of Chilean wine on the global stage.

At Viña Errázuriz a wide palette of grape varieties is grown, each carefully chosen to express the unique terroir. From powerful Cabernet Sauvignon, elegant Pinot Noir and full-bodied Shiraz to complex Malbec and the distinctive Chilean signature grape Carmenere, their red wines offer exceptional depth and character.

White wines such as vibrant Sauvignon Blanc and harmonious Chardonnay showcase the estate’s ability to deliver both liveliness and finesse. This versatility has cemented Viña Errázuriz as one of the world’s most renowned wine producers.
